Can We Turn Perimenopause Into An Opportunity

Perimenopause is receiving a lot of attention right now, and rightfully so. While most of us are familiar with menopause, there has not been much education about the transition of time leading up to it, aka perimenopause.

Perimenopause can begin as early as 35, though some women will not experience symptoms of this transition until their late 40s. Additionally, it can go on for years, leading up to menopause.

Each woman’s experience of perimenopause can vary widely based on genetic and lifestyle factors. However, common symptoms of perimenopause include brain fog, more aches and pains, changes to the menstrual cycle causing absent or more frequent periods, mood swings, changes to skin and hair, hot flashes, changes to libido, weight gain, and difficulty sleeping.

Many women experience frustration with these changes, and for good reason. Declining estrogen and progesterone levels not only cause these physical symptoms but also seem to evoke a reckoning that occurs on a deeper level. It becomes both physically and emotionally challenging to tolerate things that were previously tolerated.

This is where perimenopause can become an opportunity, and a time to honor oneself and all that comes with womanhood.

Focusing on basic foundations of health, such as nutrition, hydration, movement, sleep, and stress management, is critical and can go a long way. It is important to provide the body with the building blocks it needs through nutrition. For most, it can be helpful to ensure adequate protein intake to support adrenal function, hormone balance, and bone health. Fiber and healthy sources of dietary fat can also be supportive. Additionally, exercise such as strength training is a great way to support bone and brain health in the menopausal years.

Some women may find they’d like additional support. In naturopathic medicine, we view the body holistically and offer a variety of modalities to support each individual’s unique symptoms and goals during perimenopause. If you’re experiencing symptoms of perimenopause and wish to have further support, you can schedule an appointment with one of our naturopathic doctors. Together, we can determine the best support for you as you go through this rite of passage.
