Naturopathic Perspective on Dementia
Dementia is one of the leading causes of disability, dependency, and death among the geriatric population, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Dementia results from various injuries and diseases that affect the brain, impairing memory, cognition, and the ability to perform daily activities. Furthermore, dementia disproportionately impacts women. This is due to either having the condition themselves or serving as caregivers for those who have dementia.
Dementia is a progressive condition, and early symptoms may include changes to mood and behavior. Over time, there may be changes in memory, including losing or forgetting things, experiencing confusion in familiar places or situations, difficulty performing familiar activities, difficulty making decisions, and difficulty with navigation. Over time, it can be common for those with dementia to become more socially withdrawn.
Alzheimer’s is one of the most common forms of dementia, and is thought to contribute to over half of dementia cases. Other forms of dementia include frontotemporal, Lewy body, and vascular dementia. Additionally, dementia may develop due to alcoholism, chronic infections, or diseases.
At this time, there is no known definitive treatment for dementia. However, known risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, substance abuse, physical inactivity, social isolation, and depression. For these reasons, in our geriatric population, it’s important to ensure their cardiac, metabolic, and social health is optimal. Additionally, ensuring activities that stimulate the brain and supporting regular movement are important.
Lifestyle support can go a long way in preventing or slowing the progression of dementia. In naturopathic medicine, we use a comprehensive, individualized approach. We also place an emphasis on supporting sustainable nutrition strategies, exercise routines, and an evidence-based approach to herbs and supplements.
